Magallanes

(Patagonia)

Cut off from the rest of the country by road, Magallanes is a windswept and mountainous region. Highlights include the spectacular Torres del Paine national park and Punta Arenas, the most southern city in the world.

Parque Nacional Torres Del Paine

Regarded by some as South America's finest park, Torres Del Paine has a feast of different landscapes, from glaciers, waterfalls, turquoise lakes and abundant wildlife.
Since the overexploitation of its land and wildlife ended in 1959, the park has made a remarkable recovery highlighted by the guanaco which now openly graze.
I think this is Lake Nordenskjold looking out on the Towers of Paine, vertical pillars of granite 2000m above the Patagonian steppe.

Punta Arenas

A statue of Magallanes, commemorating his voyage in 1520, the first European to set foot here, although, many attempted Spanish colonizations failed.
This stone castle belonged to Charly Milward, the distant relative of Bruce Chatwin who inspired his novel, In Patagonia.
