Unfortunately due to a big cloud, the magnificent vistas can not be seen here, but to the north the world's 3rd highest mountain, Kanchendzonga can be seen dominating the horizon.
The colourful interior is richly decorated with paintings and ceremonial scarves.
8 km from Darjeeling is Ghoom monastery built by a famous astrologer.
The Mall - Darjeeling belonged to Sikkim until 1817 when the British took control. It then became a very popular hill resort, and a popualr destination for Nepalese labourers, many who worked on the flourishing tea industry.
Intermittent power failures highlights the location of Darjeeling, "the place of the thunderbolt" as it sits on a ridge 2200m up in the Himalayas
The journey from Siliguri to Darjeeling takes over nine hours and covers only 90 km. But the small-gauge toy train can provide panoramic views of the Himalayas. If you're in no rush and don't mind being overtaken by pushbikes then there is no better way to appreciate your surroundings. However, it is becoming unreliable, there is a man who sits on the front watching out for track that may be washed away.
is still considered the queen of all hill stations and famous for its tea plantations. From Tiger Hill you can enjoy magnificent views of Kangchendzonga and perhaps even glimpse Mount Everest. The Ghoom Buddhist Monastery is the most famous in the town and worth visiting.
