MOROCCO '99

Mosque Hassan II in Casablanca

Raised by public subscription there is real pride for the mosque and it is a fine contribution to Moroccan architecture

Keeping up with technology the minaret provides a laser beam aimed at Mecca, there is a glass floor over the ocean and a roof that rolls open

Inside there is room for 20,000 worshippers and another 80,000 in the courtyard

Built on reclaimed land, the mosque took 13 (1993) years to complete and is the tallest structure in Morocco
